In the Engadine: high above Scuol
Anyone who has ever been there will be more than likely attracted again and again by this wide, light-flooded valley in the south of the canton of Graubünden. Deep down in the valley, the Inn meanders down the valley towards the Danube river and the Black Sea. In this region I am especially touched by the area around Scuol.
From the lowlands we reach Landquart by train, where we change to the Rhaetian Railway. This one will take us to Klosters first.
Afterwards it leads us through the Vereina Tunnel to Saglians into the Engadine. From here, the railway coach announcements will also be heard in Rhaeto-Romanic – our fourth, well-sounding national language. Soon we reach the terminal station of Scuol. The train ride alone is an amazing experience. After each tunnel and each bend, the landscape reveals itself in a new composition and brings everyone into a joyful mood.
A stroll through the upper part of Scuol shows the changes that tourism on a grand scale brings with it. But like everywhere else, the tranquility and originality is only a few hundred meters away. In the lower part of the village we marvel at the old Engadine houses, decorated with paintings, with their funnel-shaped window panes that grow larger towards the south.
If you are staying in Scuol I recommend the hotel “Arnica“. Thanks to the quietly situated, original oval 3-star house and the incomparable hospitality of its owners, you will feel immediately at home. Good food and professional service you will find in the restaurant “Traube“. For wellness lovers I recommend the thermal spa “Boign Engadina” in the middle of the village.
The freshly snow-covered landscape and the wonderful sunshine pull us into the mountains today. The high-altitude hiking trail between Motta Naluns and Prui offers an impressive panoramic view. The Motta Naluns can be reached by cable car, which has its valley station right next to the Scuol railway station.
Both Motta Naluns and Prui offer possibilities for refreshments. Calculate between 30 and 40 minutes for one way – depending on the direction. From Motta Naluns it goes up gently a little bit before it continues steadily down to Prui.
Up here it becomes easy for you to feel nature. Enjoy the silence. Listen to the crunching of snow under your shoes. There are traces of animals everywhere in the snow. Let your imagination run wild as to which track belongs to which animal. If you stop once in a while you will be overwhelmed by this view and the impressive peaks around you. As you can see, it doesn’t take much to experience the power of nature; just as the tranquility of nature lets you become calmer inwardly when you indulge in the moment.
This little excursion into nature shows that we don’t have to travel far. Nature is always there. Even in the city it is still there. If we pay attention to nature, we will be richly rewarded.
